Spouse/Child Visas: Please Apply Together!
There seems to be some bad advice out there that it’s easier to get a visa for you and your spouse/child if you apply separately, a few weeks apart, instead of applying together. While you can do this if it is convenient, there really is no reason that you should avoid applying at the same time. In fact, often it makes it harder for our visa officers to determine whether or not someone has a valid marriage/parent relationship if we cannot talk to all the applicants at the same time. This means it might make it harder for your spouse/child to obtain a visa if they wait to apply after you have received your visa.
We have noticed this especially with our J (visiting scholars), F (students), and H (worker) visas. Sometimes the primary applicant will go so far as to tell us that their spouse won’t be visiting them, and then their spouse/child applies for a visa a few weeks later. This causes the visa officer to doubt the identity of the spouse/child.
If you are applying for a J, F, or H visa and you can’t apply with your family at the same time, please tell the visa officer at the end of the interview that your spouse/child will probably also apply. The officer will add a note in the system that allows the next interviewing officer to know that the spouse/child is planning on visiting the United States, making it easier for them to obtain a visa.
The US visa law for dependent visas (spouses/children) is fairly simple. If the primary applicant is found to fulfill our requirements for a visa, the dependents are also eligible for a visa as long as the relationship between the spouse/child and the primary applicant is credible.
